The band Defunkt was formed in 1978. (Right 25 years ago now!) Over the years a lot of musicians were part of the band. There are now 3 flavours of Defunkt available. First of all the famous Defunkt New York with 4 of the most talented New York musicians: Adam Klipple on keyboards, Tobias Ralph on drums, Kim Clarke on Bassguitar and Alex Harding on Sax. For more violence we have the 21member Defunkt Big Band. And now in 2004 introducing:

Kosen-Rufu !!

"Kosen-Rufu" After coming to Holland, Joseph Bowie's Defunkt and his life has undergone a surprise transformation! The NY version of Defunkt and the Defunkt Big band will continue to function, however these bands will now be under the umbrella of new Kosen-Rufu Organisatie, a new culture organization based on Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhist principles, designed to supply culture and community workshops free to the community.

The new band, "Kosen-Rufu" has officially been formed in Holland, to generate the new musical ideas of Joseph Bowie and associates. The debut concert will take place March 13, in Gorinchem, the Netherlands. This band promises to be the freshest, newest and most exciting project born from the Defunkt tradition. With bassist Sylvain van Duffelen and brother Jeffrey van Duffelen on drums, Joe is shaping a new sound, designed perfectly for the times, incorporating groove, dance and funk like it has never been experienced before!!!

Kosen-Rufu is a production company, currently in the studio now, preparing what is to be one of the most exciting new CD's and DVD's of the era. This new product is tentatively scheduled for release in late summer, 2004. However, we are spending more time on this recording project than ever before and are in no rush to finish! The important thing is that it is slamming, with a new, positive message, to counter the whoer'ish and destructive messages presented by the media today! These are the images that destroy our children and their hopes and dreams for the future. The new rapper, "Vader" will debut on this production. He promises to reverse the images polluting our media waves and bring invigorating, positive ideals and images to the youth. The theme of the Kosen-Rufu Organisatie is "Make Humanity A Priority". With this in mind, we cannot fail in our journey to bring people together and spread compassion and love to all in our world.

Joseph Bowie

 

Sylvain van duffelen:


At a young age,sylvain got inspired by Jimi Hendrix. He started with playing the guitar, which he would, a short time later, change for bassguitar. He became interested in all kinds of music. Still funk music remained the most important music for him, with names like George Duke, Herbie Hankock, Stanley Clarke, Larry Graham and many other great musicians. In the early eighties he heard Joseph Bowie's Defunkt, which became a big inspiration for him. Over the years he played with all different kind of musicians. A few examples of them are Rosa King, Hans Dulfer, Jan Akkerman and Miko (ex-prince guitarplayer). Together with his brother he also started a rapp-rock-funk-formation called UFA, wich released two cd's.


Jeffrey van Duffelen:

Like his brother Jeffrey started making music at a young age. He studied drums at the highschool for music and theatre. Blues, Jazz and (de)funk(t) became his favorite kinds of music.
He begann playing in a bigband in Rotterdam. After that he played in different bands like The Hound Dog Bluesband, El Kroppo and then went to Germany to play with american singer James Taylor. Back in Holland Jeff and Syl joined together to play with Rosa King, Hans Dulfer, Jan Akkerman and started the rapp-rock-funk-formation, called UFA. Jeff also plays with bluesguitarist Eelco Gelling (ex-golden earring).
